Sitting For Long Hours - Know How Can It Be Risky For Women!

Sitting at one place for long hours, causes harm to a woman’s health in more ways than one. It has adverse effect on cardiovascular health and also increases the risk of diabetes. Frailty basically refers to a condition where one has fewer reserves to recover from any kind of illness or injury. So the ideal way to get rid of the problems of frailty is to keep oneself active by being involved in some sort of activity or the other.

How does sitting increases the risk of frailty for women?
If one remains seated for a prolonged period of time, it can lead to a number of problems, especially for women. Risk of frailty varies according to the number of hours for which a woman remains seated. The three categories are:

  • Low: Sitting for 3.5 hours every day.
  • Medium: If anyone sits for 5.5 hours per day
  • High: If one sits for 10 hours each day.

Certain studies previously undertaken have shown that despite women have the tendency to live longer than men, still they are at a higher risk of frailty. This has tempted the researchers to study this particular aspect among women

Effects
One of the researchers named Paul Gardiner, who is a member of UQ’s Centre for Health Services Research explained frailty by terming it as a condition when women have lot fewer reserves to recover oneself from any kind of injury or illness. It is also connected to a number of situations:

  • An increased risk of hospitalization
  • Falling down due to weak muscles
  • Getting admitted to residential care facilities
  • Premature death

Treatment for Frailty
There are certain measures which can help women get cured from this situation and also prevent this from happening:

  • If women decrease their daily sitting time, there would be less risk of becoming frail.
  • It has been seen that ones who have sat 2 hours less than what they used to, their risk of vulnerability has decrease considerably.
  • Remaining active allows women to stay healthy and free from any kind of problems.
