Today marriages are brittle. There are so many reasons why marriages are not working out. It can be anything from the inability to tolerate minor infractions, early marriage to infidelity and power imbalance. When people get married, they have grandiose expectations of each other, and since to err is human, spouses disappoint each other. This makes the foundation of marriage crumble.

People want to work on their marriages and the best way to get it back on its feet is counselling.

How does marriage-counselling help?

If you are looking for ways to restore sanity in your marriage, then marriage counselling can be useful.

• Both partners have to take time off their work to fit counselling sessions into their schedule. More often than not, the reason communication between partners breaks down is because they do not have time for each other. This way they are both making an effort to enforce time together.

• In a counselling session, both partners have to talk. They air all their grievances. Sometimes, people bottle up their feelings and this leads to misunderstanding between spouses. In counselling, talking opens up the lines of communication. Hidden angst, disappointments come to the surface. Spouses can know more about what is troubling their marriage and find a way around the issues.

• The counsellor is a mediator. She/he can gently guide the spouses to open up to one another. Counselling actually acts as the no-man’s territory. Both the spouses disarm themselves and are prepared to negotiate.

• A marriage counsellor helps you form a realistic picture of marriage. Counselling reveals how you can look beyond the faults of your spouse and value her/him for their positive traits.

• Through counselling, you can actually get to know your spouse better and this promotes understanding and tolerance between spouses. This helps a couple resolve the conflict that is plaguing their marriage.
What decides whether a marriage can be saved is the willingness of both partners to give their wobbly marriage a go. A good marriage therapist can help equip the warring partners with tools to understand each other and communicate. A counsellor stresses the importance of talking with each other to form realistic expectations of the marriage.
