Dry Powder Massage!
Udvartanam (Dry Powder massage)
In order to prepare the body to receive external snehana (abhyanga) properly. udvartanam (Dry massage) is often administered.
For pitta and kapha prakruti individuals it is normally done for 3 days prior to abhyanga treatment. For very lean vata types, it is done for one day only, or not at all.
A dry powder is massaged into the body in a brisk manner. The massage strokes are from bottom to top (feet to head) instead of top to bottom, as in abhyanga. The duration is from twenty minutes to one and a half hour. Afterward, the body is wiped with a clean cloth to remove excess powder. After one hour a warm water bath is advised.
Udvartanam can also be done independently of Panchakarma and Abhyanga. It is indicated in a variety of disorders including skin diseases, obesity, diabetic neuropathy. wasting conditions, myopathies, etc.
The herbal powders can be mixed with water, milk, oil or ghee depending on the condition being treated in our Vishwavallabh panchakarma center Nashik.
Also, the duration of treatment can be longer or shorter than what is indicated for purvakurma. In obesity, for example. it can be done for 7, 14 or 21 days.
