The birth defect in which the intestine or other abdominal organs of the baby are outside the body in a sac and can be seen is known as omphalocele. In addition to the omphalocele babies with this defect could have heart and kidney defects.
HOW IS OMPHALOCELE DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis can be done while the child is in the mother’s womb. An ultrasound usually helps in identifying the problem and can be detected between the age of 12 to 18 weeks during the pregnancy. It will be detected immediately upon birth if it has not been found during the ultrasound.
HOW IS OMPHALOCELE TREATED?
Treatment for this problem includes surgery and there is no other option out. Usually these surgeries are performed as early as possible post birth to minimize the risks of complications. Other parts of the stomach and organs can have trouble in regular functioning too.
DID YOU KNOW?
Children born with an omphalocele can recover completely after surgery. But full recovery is also dependant on the other complications that might occur with this condition.
