The term eating disorders is used for defining a set of diseases or symptoms associated with improper eating habits. In most cases, the individual suffering from this actually stops eating - which is also known as anorexia or simply overeats and then vomits to take out the same, which is referred to as bulimia. Both of these are life-threatening diseases with signs of extreme weight loss, lack of appetite, etc.
HOW IS EATING DISORDERS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of eating disorders is based on your symptoms. Clinical tests like neuroimaging techniques may be ordered by psychiatrists. Psychological testing may be done through psychometric testing, Beck Depression inventory and Hamilton Depression rating scale etc.
HOW IS EATING DISORDERS TREATED?
Adequate nutrition, reducing excessive exercise, and stopping purging behaviors are the foundations of treatment. Treatment plans are tailored to individual needs and may include one or more of the following:
• Individual, group, and/or family psychotherapy
• Medical care and monitoring
• Nutritional counseling
