Skin Ulcers - Can It Caused Due To Digestive System Disorders?

In the lower stages, the ulcer causes damage to the skin and underlying fat. In stage 4 and stage 5 ulcers, the damage becomes severe and underlying muscles and bones start to become necrotic, and gangrene may set in.

Exposure to heat or cold and continuous irritation can cause disintegration of the outer layers of the skin and cause ulcers. Lack of mobility puts pressure on the skin and hampers blood circulation, and this continuous pressure on the tissues cause skin ulcers. This condition is commonly found in bedridden patients, and is called bed sore.

An unclean living environment severely increases the chances of an ulcer getting infected and developing into something far more serious. Smoking leads to greater pus formation and wound tissue breakdown in the ulcers.

Pressure ulcers usually start out mild and can be treated. However, in chronic cases like that of stage 5 ulcers, the muscles and bones may also be affected and gangrene can set in. This may lead to a condition where the only remaining option to control the spread of the disease is amputation.
