Antibiotics are recommended only when the sinusitis is a result of a bacterial infection and has not been cured with conventional medicine for over 4-5 months.

A nasal saline spray is recommended by doctors to rinse the nasal passages several times in a day. Nasal corticosteroids include nasal sprays such as Rhinocort, mometasone, fluticasone etc. It helps to counter the inflammation inside the nasal passage. Decongestants are readily available over-the-encounter and are available in tablets, sprays and liquid forms. Sometimes doctors recommend OTC pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen etc. Care should be taken while giving aspirin to kids. Teenagers and children s recovering from flu and chicken pox should not consume OTC pain relievers without a medical recommendation.
