What are kidney stones?

A solid mass of crystal begins to slowly develop in the kidney which then gets larger with time and passes onto the urinary tract and finally gets into the urethra. This solid piece of material is formed due to increased excretion of stone-forming components as a result of low fluid intake. The elements that usually develop kidney stones are uric acid, calcium, phosphate, and oxalate. The stones exit through the urinary system which leads to bleeding while urinating. If you see blood in your urine, immediately consult a doctor since this is a sign of kidney stones.
When does a person having kidney stones begin to experience pain?

A small stone does not cause any pain, signs or symptoms until it begins to move toward the uterus. When the size of the stone exceeds 0.2 inches in size, it starts to cause severe pain in the abdomen or lower back since the stone may cause ureter blockage. The movement of the stone from the kidney to urinary tract and ureter is what causes the bleeding found in urine. If you need to urinate frequently and experience intense pain only to eliminate a little amount of urine then this is the earliest warning sign of kidney stones.
High intake of citrus fruits causes kidney stones.

It is not the intake of citrus fruits but the frequent intake of animal proteins such as eggs, mutton, chicken and beef that increase the risk of kidney stones. When animal proteins are consumed this leads to acid load which in turn leads to excretion of high levels of uric acid and calcium. Uric acid and calcium decrease the content of citric acid which is useful for prevention of kidney stones. Having a fruit such as orange or apple is a great way to minimize the risk of kidney stones.

Foul smelling urine is a major symptom of kidney stones. Along with it, cloudy urine, brown, red and pink urine, pain in lower abdomen and while urinating, discharge of blood in urine and severe pain in ribs are other significant symptoms of kidney stones. When you notice these signs, it is imperative to seek medical assistance. Under severe conditions, your doctor may recommend having to perform kidney dialysis.

While consumption of cranberry juice is good for preventing urinary tract infection, it has the opposite effect on kidney stones. This is because it solidifies the urine since it is rich in oxalate which causes kidney stones. Similarly, taking cranberry supplements is prohibited as well. If you suspect kidney stone consult your doctor to avail proper treatment rather than opting for trial and error with home remedies.
