Ovarian Cyst v/s. Tumour

It is theoretically believed that using talcum powder between the legs can increase your risk of getting ovarian cancer. The powder can travel up to the vagina and into the womb through the cervix. If the particles manage to reach the ovaries through the fallopian tubes, it can cause irritation in the ovaries. The constant irritation can result in inflammation and eventually bring cancerous change in the cells.

A large percentage of women develop a cyst in their ovaries at some point in their lives during their reproductive years. Most of the cysts will never turn into cancer. At times, there will be no noticeable symptoms at all of an ovarian cyst. However, in very rare cases, the cysts can be cancerous. Like the non-malignant ones, there may be no symptom at all even if the cyst is malignant. An ultrasound or MRI can confirm the nature of the cyst.

Non-functional cysts are born from the neoplastic growths (abnormal tissue growth). These cysts are common in women who have not reached their menopause yet. This condition results in the ovaries to develop a number of smaller cysts, which is commonly termed as polycystic ovary syndrome. The cause of this can be hormonal issues. It can also cause problems in the menstrual cycle and other complications in pregnancy. Early diagnosis and treatment can help in preventing long-term complications.

70% of ovarian cancer cases are observed to be the high grade serous carcinoma type. This type of cancer, which has the lowest survival rate, originates in the fallopian tube and not in the ovaries, due to which it spreads very early to the abdomen. Oftentimes, these might turn into end stage tumours by the time the symptoms start to show up.
