Ovarian Cyst - What To Expect?

A majority of ovarian cysts disappear without any treatment within a few months. However, a large ovarian cyst can cause specific symptoms such as severe or sharp pelvic pain, a feeling of bloating or indigestion, nausea or vomiting, painful bowel movements, pain in lower back or thighs, breast tenderness and weight gain. Any of these can have serious consequences if not treated on time.

Though most of the ovarian cysts go away naturally on their own but in rare cases, complications can take place and it calls for an immediate treatment. Cancer is one of them. Ruptured cysts can cause internal bleeding and intense pain and ovarian torsion can cause an ovary to twist or move from its original position.

Though there are various ways of treating ovarian cyst but the most common one is laparoscopy. The process involves the creation of a tiny incision by the doctor near your navel before inserting a small instrument called laparoscope into your ovary to remove the cyst. Surgery is done in cases when the cyst is too big and cannot be treated with laparoscopy. The treatment mode used depends on your age, type and size of the cyst, and the symptoms experienced.
