The blood moves with constant pressure due to hypertension, and when the artery is weakened, this leads to the formation of a bulge. This can rupture and may prove to be a life-threatening condition. An aneurysm can appear in any artery in the body, and most of the times, it develops in the arteries of the heart and the brain.

The heart is damaged due to hypertension because fat and cholesterol are built up in the arteries. This is a slow process and is called atherosclerosis. The heart starves due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. The passage is narrow and these cannot be supplied to the heart. This process takes a few years. This is an advantage as hypertension can be managed with proper medications before it starts to damage the heart structure and function. Therefore, it is important to keep a tab on your blood pressure levels regularly.

Blood cannot travel smoothly to the heart because the narrowed arteries are less elastic. This means that the heart has to pump faster. It works harder to end up with a wide range of ailments.

As hypertension is not the only reason for heart ailments, an absence of it does not mean that there is no risk of heart diseases. Smoking, bad eating habits, family history of heart diseases, and excessive consumption of alcohol, too, can lead to heart diseases among other reasons.
