Effects of Stress on Sex

Stress has very adverse effects on fertility and menstrual cycles in women. This is because stress hampers the productivity of the adrenal glands, pituitary glands and ovaries. By affecting the functioning of ovaries, it affects the menstrual cycle, leading to irregular periods or even amenorrhea (stopping of the menstruation process) in certain extreme case.

Self-esteem and job-related stresses play a crucial role in determining a man's sexual functioning. If your self-esteem is low, chances are that the same will be the case with your sexual desire and performance. Desire and a sense of deserving are essential in this regard. Performance anxiety can also be a cause of stress.

Stress may often lead you to be constantly anxious and overwhelmed-traits which will not be valued by your partner. Since it negatively affects sex as well, it may also lead to bedroom problems and communication gaps, wich will adversely affect your relationship with your partner as well.

When suffering from excessive stress, you may often turn to alcohol as a solution. This may often end up in over-drinking and alcoholism, which will greatly hamper your sexual productivity. It not only affects lubrication (as it is a dehydrating agent), it may even lead to problems in times of pregnancies. It may also lead to insufficient arousal, resulting in lack of orgasms.
