The success rate of IVF declines in women who are aged above 35 and the rate also goes down when the quality of eggs is poor. This is why donor eggs are considered to be a better option in such cases. Lastly, the success of IVF is also dependent on the uterine health of the woman. Abnormalities such as fibroid tumors can affect the pregnancy of the woman.

Though IVF is a popular procedure advised for infertility treatment, there is the risk of the treatment resulting in multiple births. The drugs administered during IVF can also lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and there is also a risk of birth defects such as heart and urogenital tract malformations, in the child.
