What is the treatment?
Often, orthopedic physiotherapy treatment is recommended for rehabilitation after any orthopedic surgery. The surgery itself might have been for any condition, including injuries due to accidents. The orthopedic surgeon would have joined the bones or done other corrective procedures, but for the treatment to be complete, the joint bones have to be set and the muscles that hold the joint together must accept the new arrangement and function normally. The orthopedist will, therefore, suggest the right set of physiotherapy exercises for the post-surgery rehabilitation. Joint mobilization and manipulation as well as muscle stretching are some of the methods employed. There are different appliances available to do the routines. Heat is also applied to the affected area and the movements rehearsed to complete the treatment.
The physiotherapy treatment is a phased out solution. The affected joint needs time to heal and settle down. Accordingly, the therapist will conduct brief treatment sessions lasting 15 to 30 minutes. A minimum of 7 sessions will be done and the progress achieved by the patient studied and further duration and sessions extended. The doctor may use fresh X-rays to determine if the therapy has resulted in improvement and then suggest continuing.
The joints worked upon through the physiotherapy sessions will be returned to their normal working condition on completion of the therapy. As mentioned, X-rays can determine if the joints have set well and whether the treatment should be stopped or continued.
