The term radiologist usually associates itself with a person who can diagnosis a patient's condition through an x-Ray. However, the field has advanced to such an extent that a new branch has been born out of it. Called as the Interventional Radiologist, the Interventional Radiology (IR) is a special branch of radiology that uses imaging techniques to identify the precise nature of a problem. The imaging techniques can include X-rays, CT, MRI and ultrasound for guidance. These radiologists are trained doctors and also act as a physician in most of the cases, and many of the patients can be treated at the center where the Interventional Diagnostic treatment is being offered. Interventional Diagnostic Procedures are extremely precise and use sophisticated instruments in their diagnosis. There were areas which were inaccessible earlier due to limitation but due to these image-guided techniques, the entire body organs can be segregated, and the precise location and nature of the condition can be identified. Some of the body parts and the bodies which uses IR include the Abdominal Region (intestine, kidneys, liver, stomach), the Chest cavities (lungs, respiratory system), cardiovascular tissues(arteries, veins, haemodialysis access), Skeletal system(bones, joints, spine), genitals (uterus, testes, kidneys), the Central nervous system (brain, spine) and other soft tissues. Minimally invasive procedures are done through a small incision in the skin, and the patient would be feeling very minimal discomfort and recovery time. The radiologists usually collaborate with the doctors in most of the cases in imparting this treatment.
