. There are many instances where a simple toothache leads to an abnormal condition and has to be surgically extracted. A tooth extraction surgery is needed in such cases and a dentist performs a dental extraction procedure. An x-ray is taken of the affected teeth by the hygienist and local anesthetic is given to the patient. Tooth pulling is of two types. One is a simple extraction where the tooth is pulled out using a forceps and in a surgical extraction, a small incision is made to the tooth. This is used in more severe cases where the tooth is broken or in case the decay has caused the tooth unfit for a regular extraction. Gauge packs will be rolled over the surgical area after the extraction and a patient has to bite it firmly. There will be numbness due to the anesthetic given but this should wear off in a few hours. Avoid rinsing the mouth vigorously for a few days and brush real gently in the surgical area. Liquid diets are advised over the first few days and have frozen foods like ice cream in nice quantities. This will numb the pain generally felt during the healing process. It is advisable to have painkillers before the pain sets in. Heavy exercises are to be avoided for a few days after the surgery. The healing process generally takes 2 to 3 weeks and in case of persistent blood oozing, please have it checked with a dentist.
