Dear lybrateuser, - The difference between the two is basically the rate of release of the drug into the blood stream & body - retard is usually taken once a day as it is effective throughout the day & plain deriphyllin may have to be taken 2-3 times a day.

Dear Lybrate user, asthma is diagnosed by pft / spirometery test & best treated by inhaled medicines (inhalers with spacers, nebulisers) inhaled medicines are good medicines to control, manage & treat asthma with advantages like minimal side effects, quick response / relief & easy use in emergency conditions. Your child needs an individualised treatment program, which includes reducing drug doses whenever he is better, vaccination to prevent seasonal & serious infections. Wishing your son good health.

He appears to be suffering from copd rather than asthma smoking to be given up other drugs such as roflumilast deriphyllin bambuterol news inhalers with tiotropium or glycopyrronium may be considered by your pulmonologist.
