About Novavax

Developed by American biotechnology company ‘Novavax’ and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Novavax (codenamed NVX-CoV2373). Novavax is a recombinant spike, nanoparticle protein-based Covid-19 vaccine.

The Government of India and Serum Institute of India are planning to introduce Novavax in India, by the name of Covovax.

Researchers begin the production of the Novavax by inserting a modified spike gene into a selected part of the genetic sequence in the baculovirus of an infected moth cell. These infected moth cells with modified baculoviruses develop spike proteins that are structurally identical to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that will be studded on the coronavirus's surface.

The next step is to harvest the spike proteins from moth cells and get purified with a solution called Matrix M, which enhances the efficacy of a vaccine. They later assembled them into nanoparticles, which acts as a duplicate molecular structure seen in the Covid-19 virus but does not act identical.

This methodology of developing the vaccine will create a trigger in the immune system and make it work exactly like how it will function under SARS-CoV-2 attack, resulting in producing antibodies against covid-19 by your immune system.

Firstly, as per the outgoing research, the Novavax shows 90.4% to 100% effectiveness in stopping moderate and severe COVID-19.

Secondly, unlike other vaccines, Novavax does not need to be stored at a very low temperature. It can be stable at 2 to 8 °C (36 to 46 °F) refrigerated temperatures, which is easy to achieve in an uncontrollable pandemic situation.

Third, most of the vaccines that are available in the market have a set of common and severe side effects that can be seen within 3-30 days of the administration, but Novavax shows no serious medical condition so far.

Lastly, In the case of HIV-negative and immune-compromised volunteers, the vaccine shows approximately 49% to 60% efficacy.

According to Phase 3 trial results, the symptoms may last up to two to three days and none of the cases shows prolonged effects of the symptoms. The trials also showed success so far as none of the receivers reported any adverse or serious illness conditions after vaccination.

One of the major setbacks to Novavax's current design of vaccination is that it cannot create any immunity against other variants of covid-19 ( like B.1.351 variant ). As per the developers of the vaccine the new variant contains multiple mutations which happen within the spike protein, which results in making it more difficult to produce antibodies and trickier for the vaccine to do its job.

Both of the doses of Novavax need to be administered by a trained medical professional. It is recommended to inject the vaccine into the deltoid muscle which is found in the upper arm and upper thigh in a human body. To speed up the process, doctors delivered the shot in your arm.

To inject the vaccine, a fine needle of 23 - 25 gauge is recommended. After the injection, one must put firm pressure on the injection wound for at least 2 minutes to stop the oozing blood.

Note- Do not create any friction on the site of the wound as it can irritate your skin and make the bleeding worse.

The recommended gap between the two jabs is approximately 21 days, and it is important to follow the gap strictly for the best effective results.

According to the outgoing research and survey conducted by Novavax and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), some of the common side effects of the vaccine are:

    How does this medication work?

Novavax is a monovalent vaccine composed of a single recombinant, replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus (ChAdOx1) vector encoding the S glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2. After its administration, the S glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 is expressed locally stimulating neutralizing antibody and cellular immune responses.
