LANGERHANS CELL HISTIOCYTOSIS
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a spectrum of rare disorders characterized by overproduction and accumulation of a specific type of white blood cell (histiocyte) in the various tissues and organs of the body (lesions). The lesions may include certain distinctive Langerhans cells involved in certain immune responses, as well as other white blood cells. Most often the bone lesions are painful. Skin rashes may itch or cause painful ulcers especially under the arms or groin area.
HOW IS LANGERHANS CELL HISTIOCYTOSIS DIAGNOSED?
A paediatrics specialist will use special x-rays, CT scans and blood tests to diagnose the condition. A skin and bone biopsy would be needed to identify the severity of the condition.
HOW IS LANGERHANS CELL HISTIOCYTOSIS TREATED?
Treatment for Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis depends on the severity of damage to single organ or multiple organs. Low dose radiation, removal of organs or anti-inflammatory medication helps treat the damage due to the disease.
