Zoster is used for defining shingles or herpes. This is a very painful kind of rash that happens because of zoster virus. It usually impacts older and weaker people or those with very poor immunity levels. Initial symptoms are fever or body pain along with sensitivity to light. Then a rash develops, which is rather painful and gradually turns into a group of blisters.
HOW IS ZOSTER DIAGNOSED?
Most cases of shingles can be diagnosed with a physical examination of rashes and blisters. The doctor will also ask questions about medical history. In rare instances, the doctor may need to test a sample of your skin or the fluid from the blisters. This involves using a sterile swab to collect a sample of tissue or fluid. Samples are then sent to a medical laboratory to confirm the presence of the virus.
HOW IS ZOSTER TREATED?
Treatment with oral antivirals decreases the severity and duration of the acute eruption and the rate of serious complications in immunocompromised patients, it may decrease the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia. Pregnant patients with severe rash, severe acute pain, or ophthalmic zoster can be treated with valacyclovir or acyclovir, especially in later stages of pregnancy.
DID YOU KNOW?
There is a vaccination available for Zoster however there is no 100% assurance that it can prevent you from getting the disease all together.
