SICKLE CELL ANEMIA
Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited form of anemia in which there is a lack of healthy red blood cells that carry oxygen to your body cells. In people with Sickle Cell Anemia, the red blood cells become rigid and sticky and are shaped like sickles. Symptoms are:
• Shortage of red blood cells
• Periodic episodes of pain called crises
• Hand-foot syndrome
• Frequent infections
• Delayed growth
• Vision problems
HOW IS SICKLE CELL ANEMIA DIAGNOSED?
A general physician may ask for blood test to check for haemoglobin S — the defective form of haemoglobin that underlies sickle cell anaemia.
HOW IS SICKLE CELL ANEMIA TREATED?
Treatment for Sickle Cell Anemia includes use of antibiotics to curb the frequent infections that occur because of lack of apt red blood cells. Oral Hydroxyurea is also given to minimise the risks of the painful episodes that follow. Apart from this, only bone marrow transplant is the permanent cure for this infection.

Sickle cell disease can be diagnosed in an unborn baby by sampling some of the fluid surrounding the baby in the mother's womb (amniotic fluid) to look for the sickle cell gene. This is done if either of the parents is diagnosed with the condition.
