Dracunculiasis is an infection caused by Guinea worm and is hence also known as Guinea worm disease or GWD. There are no symptoms that occur for about a year. After which a person would develop a painful burning feeling usually on the leg where the female worm forms a blister. A patient could also experience nausea, diarrhea, dizziness and rashes.
HOW IS DRACUNCULIASIS DIAGNOSED?
General physician may order for a complete blood count for diagnosing Dracunculiasis. He or she may look for serum immunoglobulin levels and WBC count for diagnosing the disease. A radiologic examination may reveal presence of calcified worms.
HOW IS DRACUNCULIASIS TREATED?
There is no vaccine or medicine to treat or prevent Guinea worm disease. Once a Guinea worm begins emerging, the first step is to do a controlled submersion of the affected area in a bucket of water. This causes the worm to discharge many of its larvas, making it less infectious. The worm also can be excised surgically. Local cleaning of the lesion, and antibiotics for any bacterial superinfection are helpful during the treatment.
