Patients with a partial thickness tear, which is responded to conservative treatment (two months of physical therapy), or those with a complete thickness tear are advised to have surgery. You must choose an orthopedic surgeon who is skilled in healing rotator cuff injuries. Ensure they have years of successful surgical experience, have finished a sports medicine fellowship, and have completed an orthopedic fellowship.

One week following surgery, physical therapy is usually started, and the patient typically wears a sling for the first two to three weeks. Generally, three to four months of physical therapy is required for proper healing. After six to ten weeks of recuperation, you can start strengthening workouts.

You should maintain the flexibility of your muscles and tendons to avoid developing a rotator cuff rupture. There are at-home stretching and strengthening activities that your healthcare provider can teach you.
