Basically Red Eyes is not really a problem in itself or a disease but is an indication of something that is triggering the eyes like rash, foreign object in the eye, a sign of some infection, etc. The symptoms of red eye include redness surrounding the pupil area, which can spread to different parts of the eye. Also, this is followed with itching, irritation, watery eyes and inflammation in some cases.

Some cases of Red Eyes are not serious, while others require emergency attention. Ophthalmologist may evaluate all your symptoms and ask you question of any recent trauma or strain to eyes. A test for allergies may be prescribed to find the cause of redness.
HOW IS RED EYES TREATED?
Treatment varies as per the underlying cause of the red eyes. If red eyes is due to allergies or environmental irritants, than oral antihistamines or over-the-counter eye drops are helpful.Putting an ice pack on the eyes relieves symptoms like swelling and pain.
