About Lomofen Tablet

This is a combination medication which has Atropine, Diphenoxylate, and Furazolidone as active ingredients. It falls under the group of medication known as dopamine-receptor antagonists. This is used to treat diarrhea and related symptoms. It decreases the movement of food and water from the stomach and intestine.

Hence, the food stays longer in the intestine which results in increased absorption of water and symptoms of diarrhea are relieved. Possible side effects include bloating, Constipation, Loss of appetite, Severe stomach ache, Paralytic ileus, etc.

Don’t use this drug if you’re allergic to this medication. It should only be used by pregnant women and breastfeeding women if no alternative is found. The dosage depends on the health conditions of the patients and can vary from once daily to four times a day before each meal and once before going to bed.

    How does this medication work?

    This medication inhibits the function of the parasympathetic nervous system by acting as an antagonist to the neurotransmitters. It increases the firing and conduction of electrical impulses of the heart. Also, it inhibits the accommodation reflex and dilation of the pupils of the eyes. Diphenoxylate is an opioid agonist which works by decreasing contraction of the intestines making the stools more solid and less frequent. Furazolidone is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and antiprotozoal substance which binds to and creates cross-links in bacterial DNA which prevents its proper functioning.
