Periodontal flap surgery is required if the gum disease is severe and it cannot be cured by antibiotics or root planning or scaling. It is often performed by the dentist who is a gum specialist or oral surgeon. This procedure cleans the root of the damaged tooth and repairs bone damage caused by the periodontal gum disease. Before the procedure, the area where the surgery has to be performed is numbed with local anaesthesia for the dentist to work on. In flap procedure for gum disease, the dentist pulls back a section of the gum to clean the roots of the tooth and to repair the damaged bone. The bone is either grafted with another bone from the body part or with the man- made materials. A lining is placed on the bone graft for the bone to grow back, which is removed later. Or the bone can be smoothed or reshaped in such a way that the plaque has very little or fewer places to grow. The gum flap is then sewed back into the place and is covered with gauze to stop it from bleeding. It generally takes a few days to recover from the flap surgery and the dentists often prescribe painkillers to help ease the pain. Care should be taken while eating and brushing the teeth, the gauze should be changed before it is soaked fully with blood, eating soft foods and putting ice on the area is helpful in recovery. If there are any side effects, the dentist should be contacted immediately.
