Appendicitis is caused due to the inflammation of the appendix. Appendix is a 3.5 inch tube of tissue present as an extension of the large intestine. An inflamed appendix requires immediate surgical removal, failing which it will burst and spill out infections into the abdominal cavity, which results in a serious condition. Symptoms are: • Dull pain near the navel or upper abdomen that becomes sharp and moves to right abdomen • Loss of appetite • Vomiting or nausea • Abdominal swelling • Low grade fever of 99 to 102°F • Inability to pass gas
HOW IS APPENDICITIS DIAGNOSED?
Once the doctor has taken a look at the inflammation, you will be put through various blood and urine tests as well as a rectal exam to diagnose the condition.
HOW IS APPENDICITIS TREATED?
A surgery is the only method to get relief from Appendicitis and it is called appendectomy. Removal of the appendix is generally practiced by all doctors. If the appendix has an abscess, there may be two procedures involved, one to drain the abscess of pus and fluid, and a later one to remove the appendix. A research study shows usage of antibiotics to be effective in cases of acute appendicitis.
