Immunotherapy or immunity therapy is the way of treating a disease by inducing, enhancing or suppressing the immune response. General physicians can provide immunotherapy depending on the severity of the patient's condition. Immunotherapy that brings about an immune response is classified as activation immunotherapy and those that suppress or reduce an immune response are called suppression immunotherapies. Immunotherapies have lesser side effects than the drugs and less potential for resistance when treating microbial disease. Immunotherapy is effective for some type of cancers as they work together to defend the body against cancer by targeting antigens that are abnormal on the surface of the tumour. The immune system has the ability to keep it from attacking normal cells in the body. In order to do this it uses some checkpoints, that is molecules or immune cells that need to be turned on to get an immune response. Cancer cells use these checkpoints to avoid getting attacked by the immune system. However, newer drugs for cancer aim at targeting these checkpoints and are helpful in immunotherapy cancer treatment. These drugs are generally used on patients whose cancer recurs after chemotherapy. These drugs are given intravenously every two or three weeks. The duration of the treatment will span over a few months depending on the response from the patients. Side effects of immunotherapy can be fatigue, cough, nausea, itching, skin rash and loss of appetite. If serious side effects occur then treatment may be stopped and the patient may be put on corticosteroids to suppress the immune system.
