In the late 1970’s psychotherapists, Steve De Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg developed an unconventional form of therapy, which is named the Solutions Focused Brief Therapy. It does not give any importance to the past experiences of an individual. The therapy emphasizes the fact that one should focus only on present situations. It is only in this manner, they can build up a pleasant future.

Where it can be used?

The therapy can help a person coming from a dysfunctional family. It can cure addiction and heal a person suffering from child abuse, domestic abuse, child behavioural problems, eating disorders, and anxiety and relationship problems. It can be used to treat a person of any age group and can be used along with other therapeutic treatments. This therapy cannot be used for treating critical mental health issues like schizophrenia and depression. However, they can help improve a person’s conditions.

Setting goals

One of the main aspects of this therapy is setting up goals. The therapist will ask you all the reasons behind opting for this particular form of therapy. He/she will also ask you to identify the methods that will be adopted to resolve all the difficulties. Once you realize your goal, the miracle question is asked. The miracle question is a very important part of this therapy because it opens up the mind to creative thinking.

Limitations

Like other forms of treatment, this therapy also comes with some limitations. Frequently, it has been observed that past experiences play a vital role in building up the emotional struggle of an individual. However, this form of therapy completely disregards the past. Another major setback of this therapy is that it is too goal-oriented. It puts too much importance on the solutions rather than the problems. In certain scenarios, the therapist may find it difficult to empathize with the patient.

Although solution-focused brief therapy is very different from other traditional forms of therapy, it has worked effectively in many cases. Individuals who want to find a solution to their difficulties within a brief period can opt for this therapy. However, they should go to an experienced therapist, as improper procedures may have a negative impact on the mind.
