Most of the bacteria and viruses attack an individual body when they are under cold weather. Under low weather, your body gets weakened making it vulnerable and more prone to get infected by external infections. Especially for young children and infants, winter can be difficult to stay healthy.

Winters can affect a baby in more than one way. During winters the physical movement of the baby restricts, resulting in poor digestion. Also, the air becomes denser which can put pressure on your baby's lungs. These reasons can develop winter illnesses that are common amongst infants, some of them are-

Respiratory Syncytial Virus-

This is a common issue amongst small children which can develop into a major medical condition like bronchiolitis. The symptoms of RSV have an incubation period of 2-3 days, its symptoms can show their presence after 3-4 days of infection. Some of the RSV symptoms are -

  • Runny nose

  • Cough

  • Rapid breathing

  • Fever

  • Congestion in the upper airway

Influenza-

Commonly known as flu, influenza is one of the most common diseases that infants catch during winters. Since it does not have any specific incubation period, its symptoms can show its presence at any time after getting in contact with the virus-

  • Cough

  • High fever

  • Muscle ache

  • Congestion

  • Diarrhoea

  • Mild conjunctivitis

Common Cold-

From infants to adults, common cold or viral fever can happen to anyone. As the name suggests, the disease generally develops during the winter season. The duration of the common cold in a child can be up to 1-2 weeks, depending upon the severity of the disease and the child’s individual immunity. Strep Throat-

Unlike cold, Strep Throat can happen any time of the year. This is a bacterial infestation into your throat that is common amongst children and adults. If the symptoms of strep throat are accompanied by other signs like cough and runny nose, then it can be a signal of serious medical illness like scarlet fever. Here are some of the symptoms of Strep throat -

  • Headache

  • Stomach ache

  • Sore throat

  • Fever

  • Trouble in swallowing

Stomach Flu-

This disease in the list is not directly linked to the winter season, however, low immunity during the time of winter can make the child’s body more prone to the disease. The main cause behind this flu is Norovirus. Its incubation period is less or equal to 24hrs and its symptoms can be seen within 1-2 days of getting contact with the virus -

  • Diarrhoea

  • Vomiting

  • Mild fever

  • Abdomen pain
