10 Best Tips On Dietary Care During Fever!

Monsoon season has started and there are easy chances of catching cold, coughs, fever, diarrhoea, etc. Fever is a common sign of infection. When an infection occurs, the immune system will launch an attack to try to remove the cause. A high body temperature is a normal part of this reaction. After the monsoons are over, a number of vector borne diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, swine flu etc seem to flourish.
You may have no appetite when you have a fever. However, it is very important to eat healthy food in order to have your body supplied with the energy and nutrients it need to fight the infections. There are certain foods that can speeded up the process of healing.
 
Foods that are hard to digest are a no-no during a fever because your digestive system is not in its best shape. Also, you should refrain from having foods that supply your body with no vitamins and minerals. The overall diet during viral infection should be light, easy to digest and full of fluids. Liquids in the form of hot soup or even plain water helps to excrete impurities. Food or any liquid consumed should be preferably warm.
 
Here are the list of do's and don'ts for the Dietary care of fevers
 
1) fever leads to lot of sweating. This results in fluid electrolyte imbalance in the body. Soups are a good choice as they’re easily tolerated and will also help to replace any fluids and sodium that may have been lost. Take plenty of fluids in the form of water, soups, honey/ginger/tulsi tea to replenish the loss of fluids. Recommended intake of water in fever is 2-3 litres/day
 
2) due to fever we tend to loose a lot of calories. So we need to take a healthy carbohydrates diet consisting of cereals to replenish our energies. For eg dal-rice, poha, khichdi, upma, etc which are easy to digest and provide required energy are good options
 
3) taking probiotics such as curd can help the gut to stay healthy and to curb the side effects of medicines
 
4) proteins are very important which can be taken in the form of dals, eats, chicken soups. Proteins helps us to repair the tissues damaged during fevers
 
5) avoid fried foods, spicy and fatty food. They are difficult to digest and can cause extra burden on your stomach
 
6) fruits:- most fruits contain 80 percent water, so they are very good for rehydration. Food rich in vitamin c are good for immunity and also to repair cells lemons, oranges, indian gooseberries are good source of vitamin c
 
7) vegetables:- vegetables supply a surplus amount of essential vitamins and minerals required to support our immune system as help to rid of fever. Vegetables likes carrot, onions, are recommended. However avoid eating raw vegetables during fever as they may cause gas or bloating.
 
8) herbs and spices:- there are many herbs and spices which work as immune-boosters. Garlic, ginger, laung, cardamom, cinnamon to name a few.
