The improper movement of air through the nose and mouth during sleep causes snoring to occur. It is characterized by a noisy breathing sound, which is a result of the vibration of the tissues at the back of the throat. Proper breathing can also be hampered by improper positioning of the tongue. Being overweight, alcohol consumption and smoking, and sinus problems are some of the probable causes for snoring. Surgical treatments and oral appliances can be used to treat snoring. Lifestyle modification and exercising regularly are some of the preventive measures for snoring.
HOW IS SNORING DIAGNOSED?
Snoring can be treated by laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP).
