Anal fistula, also known as BHAGANDARA, results from the aggravation of either one or all the Doshas (Sambukavarta). Thus, to treat the condition, it is essential to pacify the dosha(s) thereby restoring the balance between the three Doshas. In some instances, the fistula can also be triggered by external factors (Unmargi). The nature of the treatment (Panchakarma, Kshar Sutra, dietary modifications, Yoga) depends on the severity of the fistula.

An anal fistula is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal tube-like structure that forms a connecting bridge between the anal gland (diseased or injured often resulting in an anal abscess) and the outer skin near the anus. An anal fistula can be quite painful whereby the skin around the anus becomes red, swollen, and irritated. A person may also experience extreme discomfort during the bowel movement or while in a sitting position or in motion. Anal fistula can be a congenital problem which will worsen with time if left untreated for long.

A safe and minimally invasive procedure (Para surgical), Kshar Sutra involves the use of a thread (surgical line thread no. 20) that has been coated with Ayurvedic herbs such as Euphorbia nerifolia (Snuhi latex), Achyranthes aspera (Apamarga Kshara), Curcuma longum (Haridra Churna). The thread is then gently made to pass into the anal canal through the external opening of the fistula. The two ends of the thread are then carefully tied together. Once inside, the thread works by cutting and healing the abscessed fistulous tract. The old thread is being replaced with a new thread every week.

There are a few precautions and dietary modifications which can speed up the healing process. The anorectal region should be kept clean to minimize the chances of an infection. Drinking and smoking can slow down the healing process and are best left avoided. Reduce your intake of spicy and fast foods. Instead, supplement your diet with more of dietary fibers. Sitz bath with Panchavalkala Drugs (should be lukewarm) play a pivotal role in ensuring a faster recovery.
