Tattooing must be avoided by vitiligo patients at all cost. Tattooing damages the skin that might lead to a new patch of vitiligo to appear within two weeks.

Melanin, a complex polymer derived from the amino acid tyrosine, not only gives us our skin color but also protects our skin from sun rays. The white or affected area in a Vitiligo patient is devoid of any melanin and is vulnerable to sun rays. Hence, a person suffering from widespread vitiligo must always keep the affected area under the shade of an umbrella or apply sunscreens.

In skin grafting, the doctor removes small patches of normal skin and then places them over the vitiligo affected spots. Blister grafting involves the doctor creating blisters on normal skin by using suction and then removing the top of the blisters and putting them on the affected skin. In micropigmentation, the doctor uses a special surgical instrument to implant pigment into the skin.

Vitiligo is neither caused by a virus nor bacteria. It is an auto-immune disorder that is caused when the body destroys the melanin or the melanin destroys itself.
