Pelvic Pain - What To Expect

A hernia is the bulging of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening. It may affect both men and women. Groin hernias are the most common type of hernias and it affects around 27 percent of the male population and 3 percent of the female population at some point in their life. Endometriosis is a painful disorder characterized by abnormal tissue growth outside the uterine lining. Fibroids are the non-cancerous growth in the uterus which usually appears during the childbearing years.

Infection of the upper part of the female reproductive system is known as pelvic inflammatory disease. It may affect the uterus, the Fallopian tubes, ovaries, and inside of the pelvis. It may occur without any symptom, or the woman may feel fever, pelvic pain, or vaginal discharge. Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, which may get filled with pus and may cause pain. Psychogenic pain is the pain which may be caused due to mental, emotional, or behavioral factors. It may affect both men and women.

Interstitial cystitis is the most common urological cause of pelvic pain. Other common urological causes of pelvic pain are recurrent urinary tract infection, urethral diverticulum, and bladder cancer. Pelvic adhesions are the scarred tissues which may occur due to infection, endometriosis, or prior surgery. Adenomyosis is the condition characterized by the heavy bleeding and pain during menstruation. Fibromyalgia is the widespread muscle pain and tenderness.

The treatment of pelvic pain depends upon the cause, intensity, and the frequency of pain. It may include medications, surgical procedures, and physical therapy. Antibiotics are usually not recommended.
