Extraction - Is It the End or Beginning of Dental Problems?

After getting a tooth extraction done, the chances of developing a tooth infection which progresses to lung infections or other serious ailments may increase manifold if you smoke. The use of any form of tobacco may cause issues with your health or hygiene, but the incidence of infections after tooth extractions has been seen to be much higher in smokers than non-smokers. A common infection of the lungs that has been observed frequently is Alveolitis (inflammation of the lungs'air sacs) and hence it is advised that you either quit smoking altogether or stop for a few days after the procedure.

When the tooth is extracted, there may be many complications, one of which is known as a dry socket. This is a condition wherein the bone underneath the gum to which the tooth was connected gets exposed and it may cause infections or inflammations and other complications. Food and air may come in contact with the bone and thus cause the problems. You may even get ear aches when this happens. In such cases, it is very important not to neglect the situation and one should immediately go visit the doctor.

This is a serious problem which affects many people who undergo tooth extraction from the upper jaw. You may feel as if air is passing directly through the nose into the mouth and the sinuses are exposed. In such cases, you would be instructed to not sip through a straw or blow your nose and be very strict about certain medications to correct this condition. This can be a problematic condition and has to be dealt with carefully.

May people have reported that the teeth close to the extracted tooth tend to become loose and thus may fall out. However, this is very natural as teeth are in close proximity to each other and when a tooth is removed, the other surrounding teeth don't have anything to press against which had held it tightly. This wobbliness tends to go away with time as the teeth adjust. Unless it remains for too long or causes other problems, you should visit your dentist. However, it is a myth that extraction of teeth will make all the teeth loose.
