Specific reasons such as the death of someone close, job loss, a breakup, or a loss in business may cause emotional trauma. Sometimes the trauma is so severe that it requires counseling from a professional. Some people also show a hyper reaction to a loss and they are unable to sleep. All these are signs that indicate that the individual must get an advice from a psychiatrist.

Any symptoms related to sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, or feeling low most of the time is the sore point for depression, a mental health condition. Occasional occurrence of these symptoms is a part of life but it is unnatural for them to exist for long and the matter should be consulted by a psychiatrist.

Significant mood fluctuation is a sign of a psychiatric disorder. Mood swings may be rapid as seen in borderline personality disorder or may occur over several days or weeks as in manic depression. Consult your psychiatrist if you notice your mood swings to be erratic.
