Mental health of a person indicates the status of emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Proper mental functioning results in productive activities, preserving relationships, and the ability to adapt to the changes.

Factors which may affect someone's mental health include biological factors, genetic vulnerabilities, physical health, and disability are the biological factors related to mental health; social factors, personal relationships, family circumstances, and peers may affect the mental health of a person; and psychological factors which include trauma or abuse and their coping abilities determine the status of mental health of a person.

In the case of depression, a person feels low in mood, and this lasts for a longer period of time and may affect the daily life of the person. The person may feel hopeless, worthless, guilty, and exhausted. Depression may affect the self-esteem, sleep, and appetite of the patient. In the mildest form, depression may not influence the daily life activities; but in most severe conditions, it may make a person feel suicidal, which may prove to be life-threatening.
