What is the life span for a baby of 1 year suffering from leukodystrophy, along with other 18q syndrome anomalies?
Leukodystrophy is not a single condition, but refers to a group of conditions that mainly affect the white (? leuko?) matter of the brain and the spinal cord. The primary leukodystrophies affect myelin production or breakdown. Myelin is the substance that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibres in the nervous system. When myelin is damaged, the underlying nerve tissue cannot operate in the regular way. Leukodystrophies are usually progressive conditions, which means they get worse over time. They cause loss of normal brain functions. Life expectancy depends on the type of leukodystrophy. Treatment for leukodystrophy currently, leukodystrophies cannot be cured. Stem cell therapy and bone marrow transplantation have each been tried in some cases. However, the benefits depend on the timing, age of onset and severity of symptoms. Therapies such as gene therapy and enzyme replacement therapy are under investigation. Treatment is mainly supportive and may include: physical therapy occupational therapy psychological counselling family counselling (including genetic counselling) medications (for example, medications for seizures. Things to remember leukodystrophy refers to a group of inherited disorders that affect the white matter of the brain. It causes loss of normal brain functions. Onset of symptoms is variable. There is no cure, but supportive treatment can help manage some of the symptoms. Most children with leukodystrophy will have significant problems with walking, talking, and activities of daily living. Some children with leukodystrophy will have a progressive downhill course in their abilities and will have a shortened life span. We encourage you to discuss your child's prognosis with your provider. Because children with leukodystrophy usually have significant medical problems, the impact on the family will be significant. A support group (see below) may be extremely helpful for you and your family. No one can predict the life span. Please ask personally for more doubts.

Hi. What is GBS? IS IT TEMPORARY. My cousin is struggling with it. She has paralysis of lower legs. Admitted in hospital.

DM - Neurology, MBBS, MD - Medicine
Neurologist, Bhubaneswar
GBS is a demyelinating neuropathy. There is cross reaction of some organism and nerve protein that produces antibody against myelin. It is progressive disease causing complete paralysis which progress for 4 weeks then started improving. But sometimes it requires to improve over years together. IVIG or PLEX is the treatment.

My father who is 52 years of age has been diagnosed of multiple sclerosis but we do not know the basis of it and the cure for it. Can you please help?

BHMS
Homeopathy Doctor, Faridabad
Hello, The name multiple sclerosis refers to the multiple scars (or scleroses) on the myelin sheaths. MS results from attacks by an individual?s immune system on his or her own nervous system, and it is therefore called an autoimmune disease. The various expressions of disease can be managed effectively, gently, and safely with Homeopathy. Early intervention with homeopathy can assist in preventing further progress and hence deterioration caused by disease. A complete case history is needed for the prescription. Thank you.

In normal action , nerve impulses travel through neurons with myelin sheath but what happens in reflex action where spinal cord is involved which has unmyelinated neurons ?

MPTh/MPT
Physiotherapist,
There will be termination of axons and dendrites which get difficult to pass information to myelin sheath in case of unmyelinated neurons.

I've been having mild but discomforting pain in the left side of my teeth for three days that gets worse while brushing or drinking cold water. Accompanying it is a mild pain in the same left side of my brain, in the part just above my ear which gets stimulated SOMETIMES by a breeze. It doesn't happen very often and I do not have a running nose. My doctor suspects it MIGHT be Trigeminal Neuralgia. If that's what it is, do I need to be worried? Is it curable? If that's not what it is, what else might it be?

YOu may have caries teeth and need dental check up.In trigeminal neuralgia, also called tic douloureux, the trigeminal nerve's function is disrupted. Usually, the problem is contact between a normal blood vessel ? in this case, an artery or a vein ? and the trigeminal nerve at the base of your brain. This contact puts pressure on the nerve and causes it to malfunction. Trigeminal neuralgia can occur as a result of aging, or it can be related to multiple sclerosis or a similar disorder that damages the myelin sheath protecting certain nerves. Trigeminal neuralgia can also be caused by a tumor compressing the trigeminal nerve.
