Hello, I am a house surgeon at a Govt Hospital. Around 8 days back I was doing rounds of a surgical ward early in the morning and there was a patient who had an RTA (accident) in the previous night, I had to check the status of his lacerated wound which was there on his forehead. Since I was in hurry I touched the roller bandage (on his head) which was blood stained but dry with my bare hand while undressing his wound, but suddenly I realised and wore the gloves and completed the procedure. After finishing everything I was very anxious since I touched the blood stained bandage with my bare hand and I was examining my fingers for presence of any cuts or peeling of skin around the nails again and again but didn't find any, I went home and took a nap. When I woke up, I again started examining my fingers and shockingly I found a minute amount of blood (dry) on the nail bed of my index finger of the hand from which I touched the roller bandage and then I got more scared, I checked my finger for the presence of any trauma but didn't find any and started wondering whether the blood was of the patient whose roller bandage I touched and that patient's Hiv status was unknown which made me more anxious. Before I could go back to the hospital and send his investigations for Hiv and Hbsag tests he was referred to a higher centre and he left and his Hiv status remained unknown. I am still anxious about that incident, so kindly clarify my concern. Thank you.
