DOUBLE INLET LEFT VENTRICLE
Double Inlet Left Ventricle is a medical condition in which both the atriums are connected to the left ventricle. This condition is also known as a single ventricle. This condition is congenital in which babies are born with a double inlet intact left ventricle and a small right ventricle. Symptoms are:
• Cyanosis or blue skin
• Failure to gain normal weight
• Breathing trouble
• Pale skin
• Poor feeding
• Swollen legs or abdomen
• Heart failure
• Fluid builds up around the lungs
• Sweating and fast heart rate
HOW IS DOUBLE INLET LEFT VENTRICLE DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis will be done by a general physician or a paediatrician who will conduct an electrocardiogram to detect an abnormal heart rhythm, heart murmurs and even rapid heartbeats. The measurement of the heart’s electric activity as well as a chest X ray can help in diagnosing the condition as well.
HOW IS DOUBLE INLET LEFT VENTRICLE TREATED?
The treatment includes surgery to increase the blood flow and circulation into the lungs and through the rest of the body, which can be conducted within a few days of the baby’s birth. Subsequent procedures called the Bidirectional Glenn Shunt can be conducted after four to six months.
