This tablet treats smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract which occurs due to irritable bowel syndrome. It blocks the acetylcholine receptors present on the smooth muscles thereby causing the muscles to relax. This medication also controls excessive secretion from not only stomach but also from bronchial, tracheal and pharyngeal muscles. It also blocks the action of Cyclo-oxygenase (COX) which is involved in the production of Prostaglandins. Your body produces prostaglandins as a retort to certain diseases and injury. Mefenamic acid works by preventing the production of prostaglandins and thereby reduces pain and inflammation.
