Jock itch also called as tinea cruris is one of the commonest infections in dermatology today. It's a bit resistant to treatment due to resistance to anti fungal medications in recent times. Necflo has ofloxacin which has no role in the management of fungal infections. You need a structured treatment for a slightly longer duration. Itraconazole, luliconazole, terbinafine are some of the molecules used in the management of this condition. Other than medications, there are a couple of lifestyle changes which would help you in faster resolution. Keep the area as dry as possible, reduce the intake of sweets, avoid sharing of towels with others. Hope this helps. You can consult dermatologist for the doses and proper regimens of the above mentioned drugs.

Hi friends , I am Dr. Rohit Batra, from Derma World Skin and Hair Clinics in Rajouri Garden and New Rajendra Nagar.

Today we’re going to talk about fungal infections, or as you all call, jock itch . It is becoming very prevalent in our society where both men and women are suffering from itching in rural areas and other body parts. No matter what you have been using, it doesn’t go. The reason behind that is, just like the fungus grows on your bread in the household and the bread lies in a hot and humid climate, fungus can grow on your body, especially in inter tribulus area or the pores of the body, because it finds sugar that is available in our body, sweat, and there is no aeration in these areas which remain closed, so fungus can grow there rapidly.

Now because people have been using all sorts of OTC products that are available with the chemist without going to a dermatologist, then they apply these creams, which mostly contain steroids. Till the time you are applying these creams, the symptoms vanish, the itching goes away, but only to come back as soon as you stop these creams. So if you are having a fungal infection in any of these body parts, it’s better to go to a dermatologist and get rid of it for once and al, otherwise if you keep applying these creams, the fungus keeps on growing in the body, affects other areas, and can give rise to a very massive fungal infection.

The various creams that are available as an OTC product should not be used, because they just control the symptoms and not the cause. If you want to get treated for your fungal infections, you need to visit a dermatologist. You need to take the course for two to three weeks for oral antifungals, something like terbinafine, itraconazole or fluconazole, along with few creams containing other aliconazole, and once this thing goes off, one should take care that while you are bathing, you should make sure that after bathing you dry yourself properly and don’t use wet clothes.

If you are going out for any sort of sport or for gymming or running, make sure these clothes, which get drenched, are not worn without getting them washed properly. And once you use a towel for more than two days, it should be properly washed, and should be dried in sun, and then only used. Such things are becoming very prevalent in our society, and families are being affected with fungal infections. So don’t share your clothes, don’t share your towels, and make sure that you don’t spread these infections to your family.

So if you are suffering from any sort of fungal infection, maybe it’s jock itch, tinea floris, tinea corporis, visit us. You can either visit us through our Lybrate profile, or you can call us on Derma World Skin and Hair Clinics in New Rajendra Nagar, or Rajouri Garden, and we can help you get rid of this fungal infection for once and all. Happy healing.

Fungal Infection on Scalp: How to Treat It?

IAT, BHMS
Trichologist, Mumbai
Fungal Infection on Scalp: How to Treat It?

Ringworm of the scalp usually affects children. This is a common type of a fungal infection of the scalp and has nothing to do with the worms as the name suggests. This is treated with antifungal medications and though the antifungal shampo-is not to-effective, it might be advised along with medication.

Causes of scalp ringworm:

  • Most of the times a ringworm infection is transfered from person to person through sharing towels and touching. The fungi and its spores can remain alive on brushes, combs, sheets, furniture and unwashed towels for long. Some people are only carriers of fungi, meaning that they carry the fungi and its spores in their hair and skin but do not have any infection and symptoms. But they might pass the fungi to others who may develop the symptoms.
  • It spreads from pets like cats and dogs who are very prone to fungal infection of the skin. They easily pass their infection to children and other family members. Farm animals are also a source of fungal infection and if the farm gate is touched from where the infected cattle passes, it is enough to cause infection.
  • Also at times there is no reason and fungi infection can just happen out of the blue. Like for example, the fungi spores can get transmitted through air, they might get into the air by an infected person and land on someone else's head. This can develop into fungi and can cause infection.

Symptoms of scalp ringworm:

  1. The infection looks more like dandruff, a severe form of dandruff in different parts of the scalp. This is often mistaken to be psoriasis.
  2. In some infection there is loss of hair leading to bald patches. These patches become scaly and inflamed. The patches might have broken off small hair.
  3. Several painful pustules and boils occur on the scalp
  4. In severe infection there is boggy swelling on some part of the scalp, which is known as kerion. This might be tender and oozing and if not treated can lead to hair loss and permanent scarring.
  5. In severe infections like with pustules and kerion, one might develop high fever and the glands of the neck might swell.

Treatment of scalp ringworm:
The treatment of the fungal infection of the scalp involves the following:

  1. Antifungal Medicines: These are usually taken in the form of tablets and following are advised:
  2. Griseofulvin: This is often the first choice and a course of 8-12 weeks is required. The tablet can be crushed and taken with water.
  3. Terbinafine: The course for this is four weeks and is important to complete the course in order to get rid of the infection.
