Please note the following in respect to your queries: hibiscus flowers and leaves can be very helpful in preventing hair loss and to promote hair growth. Hibiscus flowers are used as an effective cure for split ends and dandruff as well. - heat 12-15 hibiscus flowers in 2 tablespoons of coconut oil. - strain the solution and collect the oil. Apply this concoction to the scalp and hairs, leave overnight and wash in the morning. To use the hibiscus leaves, grind them into fine paste and apply the paste to the scalp and hairs. Leave it on for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Rinse off with plenty of water. This controls the hair loss automatically and promotes hair growth. Also take arsenic 30 every 4 hourly and thuja 30, once a week. Continue treatment.

Anti Dandruff - Paste

Itchy scalps with white flakes on the shoulders are a common sight. It apparently seems harmless but can be quite annoying not to mention embarrassing!

  • A number of reasons including stress, an oily scalp, sickness or even season change could be responsible for it. Sometimes, it is simply the left over new shampoo that you tried the other day. Doctors believe that dandruff is caused by Seborrheic Dermatitis, a skin condition whose cause is still not known. The skin glands usually produce a lubricant called sebum for waterproofing and lubricating the scalp. In some, this gives rise to a fungal growth which finally causes skin scaling. Some doctors feel it is related to psoriasis.
  • Whatever be the reason, anti-dandruff shampoos come by the dozen but hardly any of them have the answer to the problem. The itchy flakes go away only to return after some time. Topical treatments often contain steroid which temporarily cure the condition but tend to affect the skin.
  • Herbal remedies are preferably the safest since they are made of natural ingredients like neem leaves, lemon oil, fenugreek extracts, tea tree oil and curd.
  • Make a paste of all above herbs and oil, apply onto scalp leave for 30 minutes then wash with plain water. you we get dandruff free hair in just few applications.

Dandruff

Dandruff is a common chronic scalp condition marked by flaking of the skin on your scalp.

1. Mild cases of dandruff may need nothing more than daily shampooing with a gentle cleanser.

2. More stubborn cases of dandruff often respond to medicated shampoos.

How to manage it

1. If you tend to have an oily scalp, daily shampooing may help prevent dandruff.

2. Hair sprays, styling gels, mousses and hair waxes can all build up on your hair and scalp, making them oilier.

3. A diet that provides enough zinc, b vitamins and certain types of fats may help prevent dandruff.

Causes of Dandruff

Dermatologist, Mumbai
Causes of Dandruff

The following are factors that may contribute to dandruff:

1) Not enough hair brushing

People who do not comb or brush their hair regularly have a slightly higher risk of having dandruff - this is because they are not aiding the shedding of skin that combing or brushing provides.

2) Yeast

People who are sensitive to yeast have a slightly higher risk of having dandruff, so it is logical to assume that yeast may play a part.

3) Dry skin

People with dry skin tend to get dandruff more often. Winter cold air, combined with overheated rooms is a common cause of itchy, flaking skin. People with dandruff caused by dry skin tend to have small flakes of dandruff; the flakes are not oily.

4) Seborrheic dermatitis (irritated, oily skin)

People with seborrheic dermatitis are very prone to dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis affects many areas of the skin, including the backs of the ears, the breastbone, eyebrows, and the sides of the nose, not just the scalp. The patient will have red, greasy skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales.

5) Not enough shampooing

It is said that if you don't shampoo enough there can be a buildup of oil and dead skin cells, causing dandruff.

6) Reaction to hair or skin care products

Some people react to some hair care products with a red, itchy, scaling scalp. Many experts say that shampooing too often may cause dandruff as it can irritate the scalp.

7) Mental stress

Experts believe there may be a link between stress and other skin problems.

Causes And Treatment Of Dandruff

Causes And Treatment Of Dandruff

Dandruff is caused by the shedding of skin cells from the scalp. As the cells die, a small amount of flaking is normal, but when the flaking increases it causes dandruff. It is characterized by itchiness and flakes of skin on clothing or on hair. It is mostly a cause of embarrassment but may also indicate underlying conditions within the body which may need to be corrected.

What Causes Dandruff?

  1. Not combing hair regularly– People who don’t brush or comb their hair regularly are more susceptible to developing dandruff. It is advised that you comb your hair at least 3 to 4 times daily as it will displace the skin cells and stop them from accumulating into large shedding of flakes.

  1. Yeast can also cause dandruff– People who are sensitive to yeast, can sense an increase of dandruff during the winters. During the winters the skin tends to get drier and this makes dandruff more likely to occur. This yeast is a normal part of the fungi that lives in your hair, but with drier conditions tends to flourish and thus cause dandruff.

  2. Naturally dry skin- Dry skin also contributes to dandruff formation. When people with dry skin sit in an air conditioned room, dandruff formation increases.

  3. Seborrheic dermatitis (oily and irritated skin)- This affects the skin of the scalp, eyebrows, back of the ears, breastbone and the side of the nose. People who suffer from seborrheic dermatitis have greasy red skin covered with white and yellow scales. These scales may fall off and thus cause dandruff.

  4. Not Washing your hair– Not shampooing regularly can also cause dandruff due to buildup of dead skin and oil.

Treatment of Dandruff:

  1. Shampoo your scalp regularly with an anti-dandruff shampoo- Seborrheic dermatitis cannot be cured but it can be controlled over time. Use an anti- dandruff shampoo which contains zinc, selenium sulphide, and salicylic acids. Much of the normal dandruff is cleared by using proper shampoo at regular intervals.

  2. Use tea tree oil- Tea tree oil has been used for ages as an antiseptic and an antibiotic. Some people are allergic to it, so precaution should be taken before using it by testing it on a small area of skin on your hands. However, it has been shown to be very effective in combating the development of dandruff when used as topical oil on the scalp.

  3. Green tea- Drinking a cup of green tea two to three times a day can also reduce dandruff. Green tea has many herbal properties which are meant to treat psoriasis and dandruff. Washing your hair with green tea bags can also help control dandruff.

  4. Home remedies- Rubbing baking soda on a wet scalp has been claimed to reduce dandruff among many such other home remedies. However, it is best to consult your dermatologist before undertaking any of these methods.

Symptoms And Causes Of Dandruff

Dandruff is a chronic disorder, which significantly affects the scalp region and is characterized by the appearance of minute white flakes on the scalp. Although dandruff does not cause serious problems, recurrent appearances of dandruff can be embarrassing for the concerned person.

Symptoms

If you spot numerous white flakes repeatedly on the shoulders or on the shoulder region of your shirt and experience severe itching around the scalp, particularly during weather changes, it is likely that you are suffering from dandruff.

Causes

Dandruff might develop due to a lack of proper hair care, side-effects of certain shampoos or hair care products, seborrheic dermatitis (characterized by scaly red coloured patches on one’s scalp), dry or oily skin, eczema, excessive stress, hormonal changes, side effects of serious diseases such as HIV or Parkinson’s disease (a disease of the nervous system that impairs human body mobility) and also cold weather conditions.

Prevention and treatment

You can control dandruff by applying any of the following treatments:

  1. Therapy involving peeling and subsequent strengthening of the scalp might help in the complete elimination of dandruff. The therapy is developed with the help of highly operative anti-fungal ingredients which sanitize the scalp and regulate the growth of the fungi ‘Malassezia’ to a normal level. This helps in the elimination of the intense itchy sensations and the minute white flakes around the region of the scalp. The therapy also aims to provide adequate nourishment to the hair. This therapy helps in the flattening of dandruff affected hair strands along with the subsequent reinforcement and protection of the hair follicles. If the dandruff is caused due to an oily scalp, this therapy might be useful in the regulation of the unnecessary and excess oil level.
  2. Too much oil should not be applied in case of dandruff, as it can aggravate the issue. However, you can use it once a week, 1 to 2 hours before washing your hair.

Further recommendation

Along with the aforementioned therapies, you can also use certain products which might help as well:

1. Anti-dandruff lotions contain a healthy amount of effective ingredients which aim at the removal of the itchy sensation on the scalp along with the subsequent elimination of dandruff.

2. You can also use anti-dandruff shampoos on a regular basis which help to remove dandruff and strengthen the scalp.
