Cavities are typically the end result of tooth decay that is caused by plaque build-up. Cavities are quite evident; you can feel the pits or holes in your teeth. Another clear indication is a toothache followed by eating or drinking something too hot or cold.
HOW IS CAVITIES DIAGNOSED?
The diagnosis for the condition is usually done with the help of a physical examination by a dentist who will use a light and sharp instrument. Particularly severe and painful cases will require a dental X ray to measure the extent of the damage.
HOW IS CAVITIES TREATED?
Treatment of cavities depends on the extent of damage. In most cases, the decayed part of the tooth is removed with a drill and the hole is filled with silver, gold, porcelain or composite resins. Crowns are used in case of teeth that are badly damaged. In case the root pulp of your teeth is decayed, you may need a root canal treatment
