Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (1) Test

Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is also known as sex steroid-binding globulin (SSBG). It is a glycoprotein that binds to the two sex hormones androgen and estrogen. There are other steroid hormones such as progesterone, cortisol, and other corticosteroids which are bound by transcortin. SHBG is basically produced by the liver and then it is released into the bloodstream. Other positions which produce SHBG are the brain, uterus, testes, and placenta. The testes which produce SHBG is called androgen-binding protein. There is an SHBG Test also which measures the level of sex hormones binding globulin in your blood.

For this test, you do not require any kind of preparation. Just go to the doctor and get this test done. If you are under any kind of medication or supplements do tell them to the doctor before you take the test. While going for the test go empty stomach as it will give better results. Do wear sleeveless or short sleeves as the blood will be taken from your arm. It will be easy for the lab technician to take the blood.

Your level of SHBg explains about your human health. In case of low level of SHBG, the reason
can be related to:
· Obesity
· Type 2 diabetes
· Hypothyroidism
· Acromegaly, or too much growth hormone, causing body tissues grow larger over time

If the person has high levels of SHBG than it can be related to:

· Hepatitis
· Hyperthyroidism
· HIV
· Anticonvulsants, or medicine used to treat seizures

The test is conducted in a very simple manner. Your blood sample is taken by making a prick on your arm. Before making a prick a band is tied at your arm which swells the veins and blood pump up. Then the area is cleaned by using an antiseptic and a prick is made to take the blood. After that, the band is removed and the needle is taken out. The technician will then put a Band- Aid so that blood does not flow.
