PTH, Intact and Calcium Test

PTH, Intact and Calcium Test

also known as: PTH Whole Molecule

The parathyroid glands are responsible for regulating the calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus levels in our blood and bones. PTH hormone is released by the gland which is responsible for the regulation of the calcium in the body. When our body has the issues related to the calcium, then it means that there are some up and down with the PTH gland. Some symptoms that lead to the PTH hormone test are fatigue, nausea, thirst, abdominal pain (due to a high level of calcium in the body), muscle cramps and tingling fingers (due to the low level of calcium). Different medical conditions and symptoms are there that lead to PTH hormone test.

Fasting or some diet changes may be required before the test. You are required to ask your doctor about the different changes. Based on your medical history and different medicines that you are taking, some norms will be provided to you that you are supposed to follow. These norms are essential for an accurate test result. Since it is a blood test, you are required to wear loose or sleeveless clothes. Such clothing helps the doctor to take your blood quickly. So, a sleeveless, easily foldable full sleeve or half sleeves shirt should be worn.

Now the test result depends on what is the value of PTH in your blood. In the test, the N-terminal, C-terminal and intact molecule PTH values are checked. The result is divided into three categories, i.e., normal, high and low. The test result will be normal if we have 8-24 pg/ml PTH available at N-terminal. For C-terminal and for intact molecule the value varies from 50-330pg/ml and 10-65pg/ml respectively. If the value of all the three forms of PTH is higher than 24, 330 and 65pg/ml, then the test result will be higher. If the value is lesser than 8,50 and 10 pg/ml then the test result will be low.

The normal venipuncture method is used to draw the blood from your vein and take the blood sample. First, your skin and the needle are cleaned with alcohol. Then an elastic band is wrapped around the top of your elbow to stop the blood flow and to make the veins visible. Once the veins are visible, the blood sample is collected by injecting the needle into your skin. Then the sample collected is sealed with you name it and sent to the lab for further analysis
