Osteoporosis Profile Test

Osteoporosis Profile Test

Osteoporosis is a medical condition that is caused when the bones become fragile after losing the density resulting in decreased strength. With this condition, the patient’s bones actually turn porous similar to a sponge. This causes frequent fractures as the strength of the bones drastically decreases. DPD (Deoxypyridinoline) is the biochemical bone loss marker. This is a simple, non-invasive test that aids in early diagnosis of osteoporosis, but also a method by which treatments for hormone replacement or mineral supplements can be assessed. Bone loss happens during the first five years of menopause, because of long term use of certain drugs, smoking and drinking habits and hormonal disorders.

Osteoporosis profile or bone density tests are simple, painless and fast. No preparation is needed. Although make sure to tell your doctor in case you have undergone a barium test or have had a contrast material injected in you for a CT scan or nuclear medicine test. These contrast materials have a chance of interfering with your test. It is advised to avoid taking calcium supplements at least 24 hours prior to the bone density test. Wear loose and comfortable clothes and remove all metal objects like clips, keys or coins beforehand.

Getting to know if you have weak bones or osteoporosis before you break a bone Checking whether the bone density is improving, getting worse or staying constant Predicting chances for a bone fracture in the future Finding if the osteoporosis medication is really helping or no

The standard test uses a low dose of x-ray to detect signs of mineral loss and bone thinning. This test is fully mechanized with minimum manual interaction. Central machines measure the density in the hip, spine and the body. Whereas, peripheral machines measure the density of fingers, wrist, knee cap, heel and shin bone. During the entire procedure, the patient has to lie on the table scanner for about 5-8 minutes while a technologist sits beside you throughout the procedure.
