Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate abbreviated as DHEAS is an endogenous steroid produced by the adrenal cortex. This hormone is produced in both males and females and contributes to male traits. DHEAS levels are measured to diagnose and investigate the reasons for masculine physical characteristics in young girls and for detecting early puberty in young guys. This test is recommended when the doctor wants to evaluate a person’s adrenal gland functioning. The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys and are small triangular in shape.
There is no special preparation required to undergo this test. But just in case you are taking any vitamin supplements, make sure to inform your doctor immediately as this may affect the authenticity of the test results.
The doctors recommend the DHEAS test when: Women have excessive hair growth on their bodies and appear to show male body traits Children are maturing earlier than they should (abnormally early) They want to check if the adrenal glands are working properly or no They need to diagnose tumors in the outer layer and adrenal cancer
This test is like a normal blood test which includes the following steps: The technician will swab the area to be injected with an antiseptic to eliminate microorganisms from contaminating the test For the vein to be visible, an elastic band is tightly wrapped on the upper portion of the arm which causes the veins to swell A needle is inserted in this area and blood is drawn out Once enough blood is collected, they will remove the needle from your arm To prevent further bleeding, a gauze is applied or cotton is given to the patient This blood sample is then sent to the lab for further examination.
