Atypical Antibodies Test

Atypical Antibodies Test

An Atypical Antibody screen is used for blood compatibility testing and in pregnancy to detect atypical red blood cell antibodies in the mother’s blood, which may be capable of causing hemolytic disease to the newborn. This can cause due to transfusion reaction i.e. when a patient gets blood transfusion and if the patient’s antigens and of the blood transfused are not the same it may cause illness like hemolytic disease or in worst case also cause death.

No specific preparation is required. In case of special conditions, doctor will guide the patient.

This test is carried out to detect red blood cell antibodies in the patient. The ideal result is expected to be negative. If the result is positive the patient’s life it at risk and if the patient is pregnant the baby’s life is at risk. The patient is recommended to deal with the situation calmly under the guidance of the doctor.

1-2 milliliters of blood is directly drawn out of the patient’s body. It is preserved in a container. (no specifics) The test is performed by the column (gel) agglutination method.

Nonspecific antibodies may skew the results of antibody screening. These antibodies are not related to RBC antigens; instead, they can occur from other sources, such as underlying diseases and medications.
